How beautiful it is to have such a presumably well put together device, in which we humans call the mind. If one is to further divulge into the absolute functions that befall our being, the mind is the one instrument that implements all things. Without such a device, one would not be able to function, or will they? Questions may arise to whether or not a person can function without full capacities of such a device. However, for this sake I wish not to digress any further into such an argument, but rather, would like to expunge upon the beauty that one is blessed with to cognitively output expressions, thoughts, emotions, and actions.
The functionality of such a pristine instrument affords an individual an endless array of outputs and uses. As one is birthed to the known world, the instrument that is the mind is quickly depositing the five sense of the environment that surrounds every individual. Even before conception, the mind is fully functioning and interpreting to the body the instructions it requires to operate. There is a touch of beauty that arises from such notions, a mother and child, two minds at work in constant and unified collaboration, which in the end produce a new being. If one is to postulate on the brevity of this importance during conception, there will remain not any astonishment on the importance of the mind and its functions. Furthermore, what is to say about the mental capacities as one develops into their own adolescence? It is one thing to inquire upon how a child accumulates their awareness of the known environment, but it is very intriguing to discuss further the capabilities at work during a child’s adolescence. For more freedom is willed from the mind than it is during child rearing, as a child is heavily dependent upon the nurturing and care taking from a parental figure at this stage, rather than during adolescence. As one matures into their adolescent stage and begins to fully incorporate all the minds functions, a new awareness is found. Allowing for full capacity of the instrument, one is at total freedom to divulge themselves into an abundance of inquiries. As it may be, the mind is then allowed to produce and wow an individual on the true nature of what the mind uses and functions are. I can recount times of deep thought where the experiences of fully tapping into the understanding of our very nature have placed my knowledge to a prudent test. For example, as I sit in this very room typing away and express my thoughts on paper so to speak, is it really I who is in full control of the what is presented, is it I who is really expunging upon the nature of things, or is there some other part of my soul or mind that is fully in control? To some extent my body is an instrument to which the implementing of typing words is derived; however it is just that, a body. Therefore are there two functions intertwined and occurring at exact moments of one another? A mind or soul, and a body, I pose is separate of one another. Pardon my digression for this concept is nothing new, and one is able to read any philosophical writing and find similar illustrations on this very topic, but this was just an illustration on the minds capabilities that have been afforded to me only in the current stage of my life and could not have occurred or put forth during childhood. As a result, one is then able to see the progression of this beautiful instrument that is the mind and its capabilities. I find a certain intricate aurora on how the mind functions and is pivotal to a person’s being, and often wonder what it would be like to be deprived of the freedom to fully divulge into such an instrument.

ARTchitecture
No matter where a person may find themselves, they are constantly surrounded by structures. Ranging in size and composition these structures are compiled for many purposes that feed our needs. Everyday an individual passes by and inhabits such buildings, but how often are they really appreciated. Some may have an appreciation or knack for the design detail that accompany such shelters of life, but few do remain sole engaged by the true meaning and purpose of architectural design. To some extent the general public has become disassociated from the building and its function
As one finds himself inhabiting a structure, one should really look into the functionality of the building, is there some formality that serves the building purpose. The uniformity or cohesiveness has to be sync otherwise the structure becomes another dead inhabitant of space. Blame may be on the responsibility of the Architect, for this individual is ultimately deemed with the responsibility to see the projects design and circulation through. However, it today’s society and industriously driven world, the architects responsibility no longer functions to meet the needs of the inhabitant so much so as it is to meet the demands of the clients budget. This is then where disassociation becomes derived, for the general public has no say when constraints are placed on the architect to produce the most cost effective and speediest design. Sprouting out are hundreds of myriad buildings and dwellings that no longer serve a purpose to the inhabitant, but focus more on how soon and cheap a building can be derived. From this, are the changing landscape of our cities and towns. No longer does the architect get total freedom to use his craft as a way to display not only and ingenious and artful side of his talent, but also the sustainable and efficient side.
Architectural students have flocked to various parts of the globe, studying such movements of the past and present, but few really get the chance to display their skills in this profession. It has become to some extent as holding that next great basketball prodigy to only display his/her talent on the court of their driveway. The future of architecture has become in dire need of liberation and freedom, clients need to realize that their structure is another form of art and can be produce at the minimalist of costs. There are hundreds of architectural firms that posses the talent to reshape cities and countries into a more ornate environment, but for now most are confined to design and plan the next BOX. As I pass throughout my town and look around at various structures, I become nostalgic and think of all the great improvements that could be made that would produce a more exuberant shape. At some point there will develop a person who will feel this urgency to promote action and begin to invoke a new spirit in architecture and that person has become I.
Our residential, business, entertainment spaces have a burden of desolation from which we as a society can improve. No longer will the day be that settling for the mundane will be acceptable. A new spirit within the students has evolved and a passion is about to explode in our coming generation. There will begin to unfold a new landscape filled with intricate and artistically sound structures. For it is conceivable to design in such a way, if permitted the time, one walk through the design studio of our local architectural schools will prove this fact. Students are deep in design and are making the so called box structure take whole new form. If at all the fear subsides from such clients who are so stuck inside the box will release their inner strength, they too will see the beauty of a new movement about to evolve. The downtown skyline will take on a new shape and flourish making the surrounding buildings historic artifacts of study, and this will become our new physical timeline of history. Hopefully as a result, buildings will begin to take on new names, as the artwork of the likes of Monet, Picasso, Warhol have become household names so will the Architects and their structures.

Perceptions of Success
By what circumstance does one measure success? Is success attaining for that six figure salary job? What about saving a life through mentorship, does this equate success that can be compared to the person who holds that college degree? However one measures success can be seen in their demeanor and follow into their outlook on life. I bring this notion to light, because I feel that not always was the case that my ideals and perception on life were with thought of with good merit. For a while success meant only one thing, and that was to have enough money in the world that I would be able to live without any worry. To some extent that is ok, but how one achieves this should be thought of with good morals.
There will forever remain those whose wealth will supersede any average being on this earth. This notion of attaining wealth may never depart from that young mind that sees life being more rewarding if they only had the monetary means. I definitely agree that money can aid one’s overall life and bring more opportunity to do things that one could only dream of, but of what value does having the means to do these things if there are still people who will never be able to afford a pair of descent shoes? See money can take away the struggle, but one who lives with the sole purpose of attaining this wealth does not contain the ability to see how devastating our humanity has come to be. This type of success is no success at all unless attaining wealth as this is used for the greater good of helping in any way that we to improve the conditions of our society. Aside from my digression, I would like to bring up a valid point, success is something that is every individual’s mind, and as begins to investigate their meaning of success, we can find how determined one is to attain it.
I often wonder if my overall morals and attitude of life may have been changed if my family did not have to go through the struggles that we encountered. I have become a deeply humbled individual from knowing that despite the struggle my family had to incur and still does, that will always remain other families that will incur far more hardships that I could only conceive of. Los Angeles is a prime example of this. Take a journey into any neighborhood and look beyond their borders and one will find at least one individual who has incurred this type of hardship. My heart goes out to those who are from the more underprivileged parts of our surrounding cities. I often think about the immigrants who migrated to this country for the sole purpose of attaining a better life. It is inconceivable to me to think about how their life was in their homeland that was had become too much to incur, that ultimately made them decide to drop everything they had just to make that trip to cross our borders in hope of having it a little easier.
What success means to these people is being able to provide just a little more than what they could of provided while in their homeland. As I think about how their condition may be while residing in this state, I think how awesome it is to see how content they are with having the little that they do possess. I often come across these individuals while on my way to school work or out to meet with friends, and it brings me joy knowing that despite any circumstances they may being going through, they are still committed to providing the very best to their families with the little means they possess. I look up to individuals as these, because their idea of success is so pure and I hope that I could remain diligent in my dreams and goals, for one day I will be able to live with content knowing that chasing the monetary value in life is not worth my morals being misconstrued. Passion = Nothing without a purpose
Passion, can the simplicity of such a concept inspire and invoke change amongst people? Surely it can, we all contain the ability to influence others through whatever it may be that motivates our existence. Everyone has something that they are passionate about, whether it be to gain knowledge, or to be the best athlete they can be, to the negative habits of binge drinking. A concept as alcohol can be a passion as well, think about how faithful those individuals are to their drink of choice and to consistently drink on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. The passion that is found within oneself is evident in one’s walk. However what good is it to have passion when it follows with no purpose?
Discovering one’s talents can develop passion, at the first glimpse of realizing that one’s talents are true gifts will definitely spur some passion from it. This is where the most hardest thing to do follows, that is to discover how to pursue one’s passion and not be afraid to let go of something that may not seem right at the time to continue in the pursuit of that passion. Those choices will have to be made, and in the end they will help define the person that one is to become. Fear should not be permitted to grip and halt one’s dreams and aspirations, for it is through these times that we find lessons to be learned and strengths to evolve. Therefore, to those who find themselves in such a quarrel on whether to live up to society’s and perhaps parents standard of what to become, and following something to the contrary that is truly a passion, I say steam ahead towards the passion and live with no regrets.
I have become once again inspired to continue on the path that is so evident of my passion, and that is Architecture. Architecture for me does not mean designing intricate commercial and residential structures, but a medium to which I can help change a community and a people for the greater good. There is this gentleman by the name of David Garibaldi who is an artist and does amazingly inspirational shows. David has honed down the technique of developing a painting before an audience in nearly minutes with the help of a live DJ, to help keep up the tempo. I had recently had the chance to see his show at the Bovard Auditorium on USC’s campus. This very eclectic young man is full of passion and has a great purpose to back it. Transitioning from a street Graffiti artist whose only canvas was anything that had a façade and was standing, to having his 6ft. black canvas perched on top of a stand to be displayed to hundreds of audience members, where he would then commence his work and show. David truly has found his niche for inspiring others and using his talents to help inspire others to follow their passion. David’s story is filled with excitement and life lessons, from deciding to give up the need to display his artwork illegally, to finding himself in the local jazz and art clubs selling his work. With the little means that David had, he decided to go to Art school and pursue more knowledge to help his talent evolve. He found himself filled with joy even though in the beginning he was nearly broke, but now David has his traveling show and words of wisdom. Passion with purpose is the main subject being conveyed from this 27 year old who through his shows has raised over $500,000 for various non-profit organization and looks forward to raise 1 million by the time he is 30 years of age. He is also adamant about having others follow their dreams despite what place or stage in life an individual may be in, but the lasting notion that David poses upon those he comes into contact with is that, whatever passion that person possesses, make sure there is equally a purpose right beside it. From David I have learned that there will come greater things in my life so long as I stay true to my passion and keeps the purpose that drives me to it alive and well. http://vimeo.com/8754075

Opening your eyes
If I were to describe a certain occupation, one might resonate with the type of socio-economic background this person might be from. So think to oneself about which ethnic background a person who is an Engineer, Architect, Lawyer, or Judge might be from? Now from those occupations, one might be able to describe all certain types of socio-economic backgrounds that a person may be from who hold these occupational titles. What if I were to ask the same question regarding the positions of a Custodian, House Keeper, Bus driver, or restaurant cook, do certain ethnic backgrounds begin to come to mind more than others? Unfortunately there will always be negative monikers held with those who hold position as these compared to those of the first occupations being posed. For that very reason I digress in hopes that every individual would begin to open their eyes and mind in so that some enlightenment may be acquired on how diversified our society is.
I am of Hispanic dissent and often times may be mistaken as the person who is not qualified enough to one day have such an esteemed title as Architect. Recounting a story of a Latin woman, who was hosting a retreat at one of the more upscale Hotels in LA and who happened to be bringing back bucket of ice to her room from which she was stopped and solicited by another woman to also send a bucket of ice to her room can enlighten one’s mind on how certain ethnic backgrounds can be placed more than others regarding occupations. To no avail this is a sad and unrelenting occurrence that happens to befall all minority groups within our parameters. There will forever remain these sad circumstances to plague our humanity and only through education and cultural awareness can this be changed. Our humanity is on the verge of exploding with even more cultural diversity, and from this are our high school and college campuses being affected in a good way. I openly welcome this change and evolution, because I know that through this change real influence will come about to help others see beyond their own bias.
These monikers that begin to influence negative stereotypes will evolve into our next generations’ mentality and thus produce a never ending cycle of cultural blindness and non-acceptance. The continuously growing diversified melting pot of students who are achieving far more than their previous ancestors is exciting and thrilling to see. Therefore, as we begin to open our conscience on this issue, our harmony between one another will be unified as well. No longer are the days that occupational careers are dominated by a certain ethnicity or gender, and now are the times that influence has been evoked by dominance of all races and creeds. A prime example of this new era in achievements that has only been brought about by making history was the inauguration of an African and partially white president. Conceiving of this day would perhaps not have been in one’s capability, but now the door has fully opened to this new thinking. As a result, we as a society should no longer put racial monikers on certain occupations. In light of this new idea being posed, I would like to engage one’s interest on the matter of those who are typically landscapers, in southern California these individuals are usually of Latin descent. However, being Latin myself I have had at one time had a Caucasian male as my homes landscaper. As humorous as it may seem it is true and therefore to those who do feel inclined to be judgmental on the landscaper issue, this should be taken as a caveat to one’s understanding.

Taking a ride
It’s a beautiful day in southern California, the sun is shining and the hills are verdant with life springing from the previous rains, and if perched on top of a hill with no obstructed views, once can see all the way to Catalina Island. Day as these bring me joy to live in the vibrant city that is LA. Take a ride on the 101 freeway and you will see the beauty that this city has to offer. Starting from downtown LA, the buildings cast a shadow upon ourselves reminding us of how small we are on this earth, but as one continues on north passing the Griffith Observatory nestled in the hills with the HOLLYWOOD sign as its backdrop and enters into the canyons that house the Hollywood bowl and some of the most influential residential architecture of past time, an individual can just have a little glimpse of what this city has to offer during that 10 mile stretch before continuing on further.
I never really had an appreciation for the beauty that encompasses LA, until I was afforded the freedom of having my own car, which then I would begin to accumulate the miles. Extending and broadening my horizons is what I would say every time I was pressed with the questions from my parents of “what are you heading?” I feel fortunate enough to be well aware of my surroundings, because I come across individuals quite often while conversing of the plentiful things to do in LA, and to my astonishment they have never been to some of the nearby places that are right in our backyard. I often think of the great summers I would have, there was the summer of Manhattan Beach in which I explored all there is to do in this city from the open beaches to the downtown night life. Then there was the summer of Night, which I deemed because I began to explore all there is to do in this city during the evening hours. From the most trendy and hip restaurants to the stylish lounges and nightclubs, I spared no time wasted on not finding that next venue to hang out with friends. It has always been in my nature to see the world around me and really expand my knowledge on what it means to live. Truly during this time of adventure, I felt so vibrant and full of life. I could only hope that those who don’t have the tenacity yet within them to get up and get out and get lost will find it soon.
One of the greatest benefits that came from my adventures was the cultural awareness of this city. The melting pot that is LA is how I expressed to my friends the city we live in. How beautiful it is to find oneself submersed in culture just by taking a 15 minute trip down to Chinatown, or the nearby heavily populated Indian district of Norwalk. Of the greatest joys in life that I may come across, it is the opportunity to meet people from all parts of the globe, right here in my town. We are so fortunate to have this available to our society, and to think of raising a family in this environment is one of the treasured thing that I have come to hold. Growing up and living in LA has definitely exposed myself to the adventures that I will begin to take on a global basis. Therefore, I say to you get up and take a ride to your enlightenment.

Humbly waiting for my calling
Have you ever felt a serious emptiness or longing that would pervade your every step? I have, and there were many of occasions in which, any sense of purpose would be so far off from allowing me to conceive of it that I would become distraught from pursuing the things that I wanted to achieve. This period of being stuck and wondering what is to come, and why I have been placed in this time and not in any other, would be constantly nagging in my head to the point that the only way for escape would come by shunning my very existence from the world. Oh how I longed for the wisdom that I have now, to have then when I so desperate for an answer and understanding. If I would have only known, that this feeling of emptiness was purposely derived to help motivate me to get out and start mobilizing myself to fulfill all that I have been promised.
This feeling of emptiness is not meant in the same sense as for being without, but more on the lines of being depleted of the satisfaction that would come if I only began my journey to find my purpose. See, there is and always will be a time for waiting and struggles with not only the physicality’s of this world, but also the cognitive aspects as well. These events are purposeful and hold merit, due to being that one’s struggle is the preparation for what is to come. The longing to do more and the time that an individual finds himself to be full of emptiness is the key indicator that mobilization needs to commence. Usually, I would find myself so distraught from not knowing what I should pursue in life that I would be overwhelmed with discouragement. It has always been right in front of me and yet I just needed to grasp it and not be afraid of not knowing what I was grasping for. Sometimes as we go through the maturation process, we must never be fearful of trying and not succeeding. Through the very attempt at trying something is all that we need to find what we are really looking for. I recently came into contact with a person, whom I thought I would never get advice from, but I’m glad I did. As I conversed with this gentlemen, I began to share my thoughts and desires and right there and then I was abruptly cut off and told by this man to “stop talking about it and start doing it, if it is of God then it will surely be blessed and if it happens to be not in God’s will for yourself, then you will learn something from the experience of trying for it”. I was deeply shocked and relieved at the same time to hear such words that would confound my mind to start taking action. Everything will fall into to place if we only ceased to keep up our guards and begin to open the door to let our purpose find us.
To say that I truly know my purpose in life, may be to bold of a statement, but I do believe I’ve found the direction that I need to be heading in. For there will always be those days that I will come into words of wisdom and enlightenment that will help bring clarity to what I need to be doing with my life, and through occurrences as these, I can perhaps influence others towards their goals, just by following my very own. I often tell my peers and those whom I mentor that, there will always be someone watching how one carries himself and how their demeanor evokes who that individual truly is. I tell them this not to promote consciences on what is right and wrong about one’s actions, but to enlighten them on the influence that they possess, and how there may be someone out there who looks towards them to emulate the person of influence demeanor in their very own life. If at all one is to take anything from this message, I hope that one becomes encouraged and not dismayed with frustration on not knowing their purpose, as well as to live their life with humility and seek out knowledge from all facets of life so they may possess the qualities to influence others in finding their true calling.

This feeling of emptiness is not meant in the same sense as for being without, but more on the lines of being depleted of the satisfaction that would come if I only began my journey to find my purpose.
